CAUTION! When slicing bread with a knife be careful not to place your fingers in line with the cutting action of the knife. Do not allow children to use this product. Handle with care, knives are very sharp.
The guide is designed to cut two different thickness of bread 5/16 inch and 1/2 inch quickly and easily horizontally at a very affordable price. The minimum thickness you can obtain has a lot to do with the density and softness of the bread you are cutting. The pictures show a loaf of bread that measures 5 1/2 inches wide x 7 inches long x 6 1/2 inches tall. By choosing the 1/2 inch side or the 5/16 inch side of the guide you can slice your bread into the thickness the two sides are designed to cut with ease. My goals were to make it easy to use, affordable, durable, easily stored and most of all slice straight slices of bread every time. It also needed to be compatible using either an electric or bread knife.
A Vertical Base does not ship with and is not available for this Horizontal guide.
The slicing guide ships with a anti slip mat that is placed under the slicing guide to stop it from sliding on your countertop while slicing. If your mat wares out you can purchase one locally.
I personally hand craft these bread slicing guide in Lincolnton, Georgia from solid 3/4 inch poplar lumber for the side rails and 1/2 inch birch veneer for the bread table. Even though Poplar is softer and less expensive than Oak this guide will last a lifetime with proper care. We are still using the original guide I made out of poplar lumber from 4 years ago and it is like the day it was first used. Clean with a damp cloth. Do not soak with water.
Your order will ship free the same day or the next business day from when I receive the paid order.
Videos are available showing the guide being used by going to “You Tube” and searching for “Mystery Lathe”.
A few words of advice:
The 5 1/2 inch guide has an overall width of 7 inches and will not work well with a short 10 inch bread knife. I use one that is 12 inches long.
The guides cutting slots for the knife are 3/16 inches wide. If you are going to be using an electric knife make sure you check the thickness at the tip of the blade where the two blades are connected together. If it measures 3/16 inches or greater you will not be able to get the blade into the slot to slice your bread.
The bread needs to rest on your counter and cool down to room temperature. I find that the longer it rest the better it will slice. The minimum thickness you can obtain has a lot to do with the density and softness of the bread you are cutting.
Use caution while slicing with a knife to avoid injury. Knife not included with guide.
