I’m here to help you decide which slicing guide and width to buy. Here are some things to keep in mind:
1. All my slicing guides are designed to slice your loaf using the same horizontal method. Simply place the loaf face down, insert the bread knife into the knife slot, and slice it to your desired thickness.
2. When slicing round loaves, make sure to cut them in half. Place the cut face down on the guide and slice it. So, it’s not the diameter of the round loaf that matters, but the height. For example, an 8-inch round loaf that’s 5 1/2 inches tall can be sliced using any of the 5 1/2-inch wide guides. If your round loaf is over 8 inches in diameter, don’t buy the style guide with the boxed-in end. Instead, get the open style. Then, you can slice any diameter round loaf easily, as long as the height of the loaf doesn’t exceed the width of the guides.
This bread slicing guide is perfect for loaves up to 5 1/2 inches high/wide or under. It helps you slice perfect bread slices. These thicknesses are close to approximate slice thickness due to the fact different breads slice differently.
I offer, for $7.00 extra, a removable back stop that can be used while slicing horizontally as shown in the photographs. I personally don't use one while slicing horizontally. However I do receive request from time to time for such a back stop. If you have a weak hand grip, this backstop will assist you while slicing. If wanted select the option that has the back stop.
To keep the guide from sliding on the counter, silicone tabs are on all eight corners.
I handcraft all my bread slicing guides in Lincolnton, Georgia. This guide is made from solid 3/4-inch oak lumber for the side rails and 1/2-inch veneer for the bread table.
The 5 1/2-inch guide can cut two different thicknesses of bread slices. Select which guide with the two thicknesses you desire when ordering.
My goal was to make it easy to use, affordable, durable, easily stored, and most of all slice straight slices of bread every time.
Videos are available showing the guide in action on YouTube. Search for “Mystery Lathe.”
Here are a few tips for using a horizontal slicing guide:
I’ve sold hundreds of my horizontal slicing guides across the USA, and 99% of the people who use them are very happy. After selling over 2,000 of my various style horizontal and vertical slicing guides, I’ve found that if you have trouble slicing bread with your hands, I recommend a vertical guide. It takes more skill to slice horizontally than vertically. But if you have good hand-eye coordination, horizontal slicing is the fastest and easiest way to slice perfect slices of bread. Don’t forget that if you’re not satisfied with your guide, you can return it for a full refund within 30 days of purchase. The old saying “Practice makes perfect” applies to learning how to use this guide.
IMPORTANT: A bread knife with a blade length of at least 12 inches is recommended for slicing. You can try a 10-inch knife but you may become frustrated as you slice and the tip of the blade drops out of the guides knife slot as you slice back and forth. And don’t worry, I don’t include the knife with the order.
Just a friendly reminder to keep your guide out of water or the dishwasher. If it gets a little dirty, just wipe it off with a dry or damp cloth.
Now, I know you’re curious about cutting yourself on the guide, but please be careful. It’s sharp, and it can cut bread and you too. It’s best to keep it out of reach of children. If you’re worried about getting hurt, don’t use the guide. Just return it for a full refund. I want you to be totally safe and satisfied.
If you have any questions, issues, or problems with your guide, feel free to give me a call or text at 315-868-3453 or email me at “mysterylathe@gmail.com”. I’m here to help you out. Don’t be surprised when I just say hello upon answering. This is my personal cell phone, and I’m 78 years old. This is my hobby, not a money-making business.
By the way, the guide is finished with food-safe mineral oil.
Here are the approximate dimensions:

I recently purchased the bread slicing guide and have been using it daily for about week. I make a variety of of homemade breads- some more dense than others, some with a softer crust than others, and some plain and others with fruit added. Regardless of type of bread, I always had difficulty slicing bread evenly and getting the most out of a loaf. As I began searching for a slicing guide I had specific qualities in mind... nothing plastic, something with a natural look, handmade in the USA, and non-toxic. That quickly eliminated many options. Then after speaking with Mr. Frank and reading about his company, I realized I wanted to give it a shot. The customer service was great, which is a huge deciding factor. The slicer allows me to cut all of the above listed types of bread with ease; I highly recommend.

I bought this because I wanted uniform bread slices that are thin…. This item does its job perfectly. I cut six loaves yesterday on both sides and I am in love with it. It comes with AMAZING instructions for use and care.
