I’ve been making bread slicing guides for six years, always thinking in inches for the slice thickness. But today, my mind had a different idea: “It’s not about slice thickness in inches; it’s about what you personally like.” So, off to the workshop I went, leaving the ruler behind, and creating a guide where you get to decide the thickness you prefer. 1/8 to 1-inch thick!

NO PLASTIC PARTS….ALL SOLID OAK WOOD CONSTRUCTION
This guide is super adjustable, from ⅛-inch to 1-inch thick slices. Forget the ruler and set it to the thickness your mind desires. Just use your fingers and eyes to tweak the guide in seconds. Ruler be gone…your preference is what matters. Adjust to your desired thickness in less than a minute. Guide lines are equal distance on the knife guide boards for easy alignment when setting your desired thickness.
The guide is designed for slicing with a bread knife or an electric knife. Slots for guiding your bread knife or the top of the guide for an electric knife or bread knife.
The guide is made from solid ¾-inch Oak Harwood. I laminate solid 3/4-inch Oak for the bread board portion of the guide to eliminate warping in the future. The wood finish is food-safe Mineral Oil. It’s built to last a lifetime!
Order the width bread slicing guide that fits the width of the loaf you’re slicing. No need to worry about slice thickness since you can adjust the guide to give you the thickness you like.
I offer a removable back stop that you can use while slicing horizontally, as shown in the photos. I don’t use one myself when slicing horizontally, but I do get requests for it sometimes. If you have a weak hand grip, this backstop will help you while slicing. Select the option that includes the backstop along with the Horizontal Guide.
I also offer as shown in the pictures, the adjustable guide in a Horizontal/Vertical combination. It is only avaliable in the 7-inch bread table width.
To keep the guide from sliding on the counter while you slice, I’ve added silicone tabs to the bottom corners.
I handcraft all my bread slicing guides in Lincolnton, Georgia. This guide is made from solid 3/4-inch oak lumber for the side rails and 3/4-inch solid oak for the bread table.
I wanted to create something that’s simple to use, budget-friendly, long-lasting, easy to store, and most importantly, that slices bread into perfect, straight slices every time.
I’ve put together some videos on YouTube that show how to use the guide. Just search for “Mystery Lathe.”
Here are a few tips for using a horizontal slicing guide:
I’ve sold hundreds of these horizontal slicing guides across the USA, and most of the people who use them are really happy! After selling over 2,000 of my different horizontal and vertical slicing guides, I’ve noticed that if you’re having trouble slicing bread with your hands, a vertical guide might be a better fit. It does take a bit more skill to slice horizontally than vertically. But if you’re good at hand-eye coordination, horizontal slicing is the quickest and easiest way to get perfect slices of bread. Just a heads-up: if you’re not completely satisfied with your guide, you can return it for a full refund within 30 days of buying it. The old saying “Practice makes perfect” definitely applies to learning how to use this guide.
IMPORTANT: For best results, I recommend using a bread knife with a blade length of at least 12 inches. You could try a 10-inch knife, but you might find it frustrating as you slice, and the blade tip might fall out of the guides’ knife slot as you move back and forth. And don’t worry, I’m not including the knife with the order.
Just a friendly reminder to keep your guide dry and out of water or the dishwasher. If it gets a little dirty, just wipe it off with a dry or damp cloth.
Now, I know you’re wondering about cutting yourself on the guide, but please be careful. It’s sharp, and it can cut bread and you too. It’s best to keep it out of reach of children. If you’re worried about getting hurt, don’t use the guide. Just return it for a full refund. I want you to be totally safe and satisfied.
If you have any questions, run into any snags, or just need a hand with your guide, please don’t hesitate to call or text me at 315-868-3453, or shoot me an email at “mysterylathe@gmail.com”. I’m here to lend a hand. You might even be surprised when I just say hello when I answer. This is my personal cell phone, and I’m 78 years old. It’s a hobby, not a business.
